Rent a Car in Portugal: Essential Tips
Flexible Travel
Renting a car in Portugal gives you the freedom to explore historic cities, scenic coastlines, rolling vineyards, and charming villages at your own pace, without depending on public transport schedules.
Documents for Tourists
Tourists should carry a valid passport and a driver's license from their home country. Drivers with licenses issued in the EU or EEA can use them without restriction. Visitors from many other countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, can generally drive with their home license for short stays, though carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if the license isn't in Portuguese or uses a non-Latin alphabet.
Documents for Residents
Residents renting a car in Portugal typically need a valid Portuguese or EU driving license, a government-issued ID or passport, and may be asked to provide proof of residence, depending on the rental provider.
Credit Card Requirement
A credit card in the renter's name is generally required for the security deposit and rental payment. This helps secure your booking and covers any additional charges that may arise during the rental period.
Driving Regulations
Vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road in Portugal, and seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Speed limits are generally 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on secondary roads, and 120 km/h on motorways unless otherwise signposted.
Child Seat Regulations
Children under 12 years old or shorter than 135 cm must travel in an approved child restraint system appropriate for their size and weight. Rear-facing child seats may only be used in the front seat if the passenger airbag is deactivated.
Traffic Rules
The legal blood alcohol limit for most drivers is 0.05%, while lower limits apply to novice and professional drivers. Mobile phones may only be used with a hands-free system while driving.
Toll Roads and Fuel Costs
Many Portuguese motorways operate electronic or traditional toll systems, so confirm with your rental provider how toll charges are handled. Fuel stations are widely available throughout the country, including along major highways.
Navigation and Parking
GPS or navigation apps are recommended, particularly when driving through historic city centres or rural regions. Paid parking is common in major cities, while free parking is often available in smaller towns. Traffic can be heavy during rush hours in Lisbon and Porto.
Driving Conditions and Insurance
Portugal has a well-maintained road network, although some rural and mountain roads can be narrow and winding. Comprehensive insurance is recommended for additional peace of mind. Before driving, review your rental agreement to understand exactly what coverage is included.

The Best Time to Rent a Car in Portugal
Low Season Rentals Provide the Best Value
For the best value in Portugal, book your rental car in advance, choose an economy vehicle, and travel during the low season when prices are generally lower and availability is better.
Summer Months Drive Up Rental Rates
Car rental prices typically increase from June through September as warm weather, school holidays, and popular beach destinations attract more domestic and international travellers.
June Marks the Start of Peak Season
June marks the beginning of Portugal's busy travel season, bringing higher demand for rental cars. Booking early helps secure better rates and a wider choice of vehicles, especially for summer travel.
