Plan Your Jamaica Route
Most renters drive one of three routes. The north coast links Montego Bay, Falmouth and Ocho Rios, with Negril a detour west. The south coast runs to Treasure Beach. The east leads from Kingston into the Blue Mountains and Port Antonio. A car reaches waterfalls and beaches buses skip.
Documents and Age Requirements
Bring your valid passport and driving licence, plus a credit card in the main driver's name. Most suppliers want drivers aged 23 or over, and some accept 21 with a young driver fee charged per day.
Driving on the Left
Jamaica drives on the left, and your rental is usually right hand drive. Give way at roundabouts to traffic from the right. Practise in the airport car park before joining traffic.
Deposit and Credit Card
Your credit card must carry the main driver's name. The deposit is $500 on cars and SUVs, released after return. Debit cards are rarely accepted for the hold. Visa and Mastercard are the safest choice.
Speed Limits in Jamaica
Limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on open roads and 30 km/h near schools. Highway 2000 shows its own posted speed limits. Signs are in kilometres per hour, and police use mobile radar. Overtake only on the right.
Child Seats in Jamaica
Children under 12 should ride in the back. Young children need a child seat or booster for their size. Request one at booking so it is ready on arrival.
Alcohol Limit and Phone Use
The alcohol limit is 0.08 percent, so skip drinks before driving. Phones must stay hands free. Police run checkpoints, so keep your licence, passport and all rental papers in the car.
Highway 2000 Tolls and Fuel
Highway 2000 is the main toll road. Pay in cash or with a TAG card, and keep small Jamaican dollar notes handy. Fill up before the south coast.
Navigation and Parking
Google Maps and Waze both work, but drives often run longer than the app says, as our Jamaica driving guide explains. Download offline maps before the Blue Mountains. Park in attended areas in both Montego Bay and Kingston.
Insurance in Jamaica
Suppliers usually require third party liability and collision damage waiver cover. Some accept card cover only with a letter from your card issuer, so ask before you travel. Check that the insurance certificate in the glovebox is valid before leaving.

Winter sun fills Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios, and rates rise with demand. Book a few weeks ahead for SUVs and 7 seat cars. Christmas and New Year weeks sell out fastest.
Book Early for Sumfest, Easter and Independence Day
Reggae Sumfest in July, Easter and Independence Day in early August bring extra visitors and local travel. Cars and 7 seat vehicles go first, so reserve as soon as your dates are set. Roads near Montego Bay are busiest on festival weekends.
